From the Creation of the Universe to Personal Discovery: The First Great Montessori Story

Cosmic education in Montessori pedagogy begins with grand stories that open up the world to children and help them perceive its connections. In our Elementary I SUN and Elementary I MOON classes, too, we set out on our first journey together right in September—to explore the origins of the universe and our Earth.

The Great Montessori Stories are among the fundamental pillars of space education. Together with many smaller, complementary stories, they connect individual areas of learning and show children that nature, life, and human activity are all part of a single, interconnected world.

Their goal is not merely to convey facts and ready-made answers. Above all, they are meant to awaken wonder, imagination, and curiosity. They encourage children to ask questions and inspire them to explore on their own, seek connections, and get to the bottom of things.

And where better to begin such exploration than at the very beginning?

The first Big Story took us back to the birth of the universe and the formation of our planet. Through engaging storytelling, illustrative demonstrations, and simple experiments, the children discovered the forces and fundamental laws of the non-living world that shaped the world around us. Abstract concepts thus took on a more concrete form and became a catalyst for further reflection.

This is precisely where the power of Montessori stories lies. The shared experience serves as a starting point, followed by independent work and discovery. Each child may be drawn to something different and set out to explore the questions that the story has sparked within them.
